One of the most prolific librettists of the 19th century, Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges was a leading figure in French opera in Paris. His works spanned several genres, including vaudeville, operas, ballets, but the majority of his works were in the opera-comique or opera buffa style, basing their comedy on farcical situations and limited characterisation.

Saint-Georges's collaborators included French librettist Eugene Scribe, and composers Halevy, Bizet, and Donizetti. During his lifetime he wrote or contributed to over 70 works for stage.
